Following the tragic death of a father-to-be involved in an accident at Gambas Avenue on April 10, the mother of the other affected motorcyclist has shared their heartbreaking account of what happened.

“Everyone is talking about the rider who passed on at Gambas Avenue,” wrote Facebook user Sarah BoiCina Widjaya, the mother of the 20-year-old rider also involved in the accident.

“Yes, I do feel sad for the family lost, the unborn child. My condolences. What about the rider who was conveyed to the hospital?” she asked, adding that all she saw was news of her son being conveyed to the hospital while conscious.

“Nothing else about him, not even his name. Did anyone even ask what happened to him?” said Ms Widjaya, noting he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

She then introduced her son, Muhammad Alif, who had just celebrated his birthday the day before the accident.

Mr Alif has four siblings and is working as a nurse.

Ms Widjaya noted that initially, no one attended to her son until two passers-by rushed over to help.

Even in such pain, all he kept mentioning was wanting to stand up to help the other rider, said the concerned mother.

Upon arriving at the hospital, doctors said that Mr Alif was in critical condition and experiencing internal bleeding.

“He had 50-50 chances of survival, with a crushed left pelvic, broken ribs and wrist, hole in his left elbow, lacerations and torn lips,” said Ms Widjaya.

Mr Alif is still warded in the intensive care unit, having undergone three major surgeries.

Ms Widjaya noted that the medical bills are taking a toll on their finances.

She also wondered if her son would be able to pursue his career following the accident.

Mr Alif was working part-time at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital while waiting for his National Service (NS) enlistment, reported Mothership.

“Will he be able to do normal simple chores like he used to? What will happen to his future? He is taking it so hard to accept his fate. He is emotionally disturbed and traumatised. He is worried about being a burden to his family,” said the mother, who admitted her heart was breaking seeing her child in such a condition.

Ms Widjaya has started a fundraising initiative through Give.Asia, already receiving over S$101,000 in donations. Those who wish to extend their support to Mr Alif and his family can do so here.

Netizens also advised the mother to seek further assistance from the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

“Sarah, if you are reading my comment, take up a civil suit against th van driver, his insurance will come into the picture to cover your son’s medical fees and future lost of income and pain or sufferings,” added Facebook user Jan Yap.

Jason Tan, a 24-year-old food delivery rider, was killed in the accident while reportedly trying to fulfil 13 more orders to earn an incentive.
