Singapore — A video cliip of a man chucking an e-scooter into a body of water has gone viral, with netizens condemning something they immediately assumed had happened in Singapore.
The clip first csurfaced on the @robinhoot.sg Instagram account, where it has since been viewed more than13,000 times.
But the incident did not happen in Singapore.
On Facebook, on the Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road page, it has been viewed more than 132,000 times and whas also been idely shared.
The nine-second video shows a young guy who looks Caucasian picking up an e-scooter, while a mechanized voice says, “Please stop.”
The youth’s companions, meanwhile, are heard laughing at his stunt.
He is then seen lifting the e-scooter over his head and throwing it it over the railing into the water, then running away.
The caption on IG reads, “CNY tribute to Aquaman….”
Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road’s post offers more information, claiming that the e-scooter had been thrown into a “Singapore river” and that it was “supposedly rented from Neuron Mobility E-scooter.”
But the company does not operate in Singapore, althougt it originated here. Its website lists Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea and the United Kingdom as the countries where it operates.
According to Singapore Uncensored, the incident happened in Australia. Neuron Mobility is helping the police there with their investigations.
If the incident had happened in Singapore, the youth would face some pretty stiff penalties if he’s caught.
For a littering offence, under section 17 of the Environmental Public Health Act of Singapore, discarding a motor vehicle, furniture or bulky article would make him liable for up to $50,000 in fines for the first offence.
For a second or subsequent offence, the maximum penalty is a $10,000 ifine and three months in jail. He might also face a charge of vandalism, for which he could be liable for a fine, caning or other penalties.
Commenters on the Ben Chia Lor page also expressed concern over the impact that the e-scooter would have on the environment.
Others were quick to point out that he deserved to be penalized for his act.
Several netizens were angered by the onlookers who laughed at the youth.
