Why can’t joggers use pedestrian crossing, gripes motorist spotting jogger’s near miss at Toa Payoh East

Singapore – It was a close call for a jogger who crossed a street incorrectly and failed to watch out for incoming vehicles.

Video footage of the incident which happened along Toa Payoh East on Dec 29 was posted on Facebook page ROADS.sg, sparking backlash among netizens as the pedestrian crossing was “literally right beside” the jogger.

“Few things went very wrong for this jogger,” wrote ROADS.sg on its post. The first was that the man should have crossed at the designated junction crossing.

Secondly, he failed to watch out for traffic.

Lastly, he crossed in between vehicles which is a blind spot for other drivers, the post noted.

Fortunately, the driver of the passing vehicle was alert and slowed down at the right moment, avoiding a possible collision with the jogger.

The video began with the man about to cross the street despite the traffic light showing green.

As he reached the middle of the street, an incoming vehicle braked abruptly as the man appeared out of the blind spot.

After jumping back from surprise, the man proceeds to jog across the street.

Members from the online community wondered why the jogger chose to cross the street dangerously when the pedestrian crossing was nearby.

“Literally right beside traffic light only also don’t want to use,” commented Facebook user Lee Jiesheng.

“This kind of people is a special breed. A similar incident happened to me last week outside Paragon; fortunately, I was driving at a slower than normal pace,” wrote another netizen. “Don’t know why they can’t use the pedestrian crossing; it’s just there!”/TISG
