Singapore — On Monday, Minister of Health Ong Ye Kung said that despite others’ opinions of the “flip-flop” approach the government has taken in managing the Covid-19 pandemic, it was the “correct” approach for the country.

“Some may feel that this middle-of-the-road approach is unclear, and may even appear to be a ‘flip-flop’. But it has helped us avert the massive deaths that many countries have suffered from,” the Straits Times reported Mr Ong as saying at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Asia-Pacific Conference.

“It is the correct approach for Singapore and, day by day, we are moving closer to the light at the end of the tunnel,” he added

While infection numbers have soared and the number of Covid-related deaths has also gone up, the government has coped by adding more manpower and simplifying health protocols, which would decrease the burden on government resources.

However, netizens, many of whom said they experienced some confusion with the government’s messaging on the pandemic, did not seem convinced.

“Looks like even the international arena may be confused with what you are doing,” wrote another.

Many expressed concern over the rise in the number of recent deaths.

One commenter called him out for “self-praise.”

Others brought up the issue of the toll the pandemic has taken on healthcare workers.
