Singapore ― An unhappy man took to social media asking for advice on what to do because his fiancée expects him to contribute more financially.
He wrote: “[I] would like to seek your views on how married couples should split their finances on both big ticket items (wedding banquet, wedding bands, renovations, furnitures, kids) and day to day expenses (groceries, utilities, monthly housing repayment)”.
In an anonymous post on popular confessions page NUSWhispers, the man said that he just had a conversation about money with his fianceé and she wanted to apportion the expenses according to their salary. He also added that he was earning 1.5x more than her.
He wrote that she cited the following reasons:
3. She has to support her mum because she is in poor health and can no longer work but barely has enough for retirement.”
Another issue for the man was that while his grandmother wanted to see a great-grandchild soon, the man’s fianceé did not want to have a child as quickly. He wrote: “She would feel more secure having more financial support from me, in the event that her career gets affected due to the pregnancy”.
The man wrote that while he understood her situation, he felt that it was unfair that “as a man [I] am expected to pay more”.
Netizens who commented on the post chided the man for being stingy and said that it was not about being equal, but about being equitable.
