Hong Kong star Jordan Chan faces six months jail for uploading ballot paper on social media

Jordan Chan, a Hong Kong actor and singer is facing a possible six months’ jail for uploading a photo of his ballot paper for Hong Kong’s district council elections on social media.

Malay Mail quoted Hong Kong daily Ming Pao as saying the pro-China star had uploaded a photo on his Weibo account and hashtags a caption that encourages to be an upright Hong Kong citizen and asked Hong Kong to ‘keep it up’.

30 minutes later, the photo was replaced with another photo with a new hashtag that says that Chan has done his duty as a Hong Kong citizen.

Screenshots of Chan’s now-deleted Weibo post was still in circulation on social media with netizens condemning Chan, asking for action to be taken against him.

Those who take a film, photo, audio or video on election day can be fined and jailed six months under the Electoral Affairs Commission (Electoral Procedure) (District Council) Regulation.

Born as Chan Siu-Chun on July 8, 1967, Jordan Chan is a Hong Kong actor and singer. He is also a member of the Huizhou Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

In 1985, Chan made his debut by joining the TVB Dancers’ Training Class. Upon graduation, he joined the studio’s troupes which would accompany popular singers during their live performances.

Chan worked with Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui before being invited by a producer to make a record of his own.

His first acting break was Twenty Something in 1994. The singer-actor received several Hong Kong Film Award nominations: two for his role in He’s a Woman, She’s a Man and one each for Heaven Can’t Wait and Big Bullet.

Chan established himself as a mainstay of the triad genre with Young and Dangerous, which is a success. The film led to nine sequels and spinoffs.

Chan co-starred with Jay Chou and Kyoichi Sudo in Initial D.

On Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2010, Chan tied the knot with actress Cherrie Ying at Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.

The couple had their first child Jasper Chan on 1 July 2013.
