The Pakatan Harapan government made promises it will create a new economic corridor in Johor and it will be a long-term plan that goes beyond five or 10 years in development.

Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali said the government plans to create the new economic corridor in Johor and his ministry will deliberate on the matter before tabling the proposal for the project to the Economic Action Council chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He made the comments ahead of the Tanjung Piai polls in Johor.

He said it will involve the creation of small townships in Johor linked to the revived Bandar Malaysia project.

“Small districts like Tanjung Piai must receive attention from the government for development,” he said.

“We want interior areas to be given attention and the amount (number) of towns that will be developed is still under consideration, where Tanjung Piai is not excluded. “The specifics (of towns to be developed) is still subject to discussions at the Federal level,” he added.

PH is facing a tough battle in Tanjung Piai and will face the Umno-PAS alliance which has an ethnic Chinese as a candidate in the by-election.

The Umno and the PAS is in full support of Barisan Nasional’s Dr Wee Jeck Seng who is favoured as a hot favourite in the polls.

In October, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or Bersih 2.0 slammed a Pakatan Harapan minister’s visit to the constituency ahead of the by-election, saying it is a continuation of the abuse of position as a Federal Government.

The previous Federal Government was also taken to task by Bersih and Pakatan (when it was in opposition) on such visits and promises made prior to elections. -/TISG
