There is a major twist in the movie Joker and according to a survey, Digital Spy readers think that the twist is true.

In the movie Joker, the origins of the villain Joker is explored. The history of Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and letters that emerged from his mother Penny’s (Frances Conroy) past could reveal Arthur’s true identity.

Before you read on any further, if you have not watched the movie yet, do not continue because there are some major spoilers.

Arthur’s mother, Penny has been writing to Thomas Wayne, a wealthy man living in Gotham City.

One day, Arthur decided to open Penny’s letter and the name Thomas Wayne was in the letter.

Penny wrote, “your son and I need help” – indicating that Arthur could be Thomas’ son – which makes him Bruce Wayne’s half-brother.

For the uninitiated, Bruce Wayne is Batman.

Toward the end of the film, Arthur finds a photo of Penny when she was younger.

The words, “Love your smile, TW,” is written on the back of the photo.

There is speculation that TW could be initials for Thomas Wayne.

In a Digital Spy poll, a total number of 3,035 readers, or 59% of everyone who’d answered, think that TW could mean Thomas Wayne.

Brett Cullen, who plays Thomas Wayne, previously told The Hollywood Reporter: “The backstory was that Arthur’s mother had worked for Thomas in his home, and she was a beautiful woman who Thomas was attracted to and it led to a physical relationship. Later in life, she’s in and out of mental institutions. And in my mind, Thomas Wayne put her there.

“The idea that the Joker is an illegitimate child that didn’t get anything from the Wayne family is a very compelling motivation for his character’s hatred.”

Joker is out in cinemas now.
