Man jailed for having sex with girl he met online who turned out to be 12 years old

A Chinese man met a girl through an online game and soon enough they developed a romantic relationship. However, things took a dark turn when he learned the girl was only 12 years old.

Lu Wei (28) was an interior designer from Shanghai. According to court documents, he was unsuccessful in his previous relationships. He worked long hours and did not quite earn enough.

In 2018, he met the girl through an online game. They continued chatting and developed their relationship over WeChat.

The girl told Lu that she was 22 years old.

In December 2018, Lu booked a flight to Hong Kong to finally meet his girlfriend.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the couple had sex at the Regal Oriental Hotel in Kowloon City.

Afterwards, the girl then said she was younger than she initially claimed to be but she said she just turned 18.

However, when Lu was about to leave for Shanghai, the girl finally confessed that she was only 12 years old.

Despite the consensual nature of the relationship, sex with any person aged below 13 carries a life sentence imprisonment in Hong Kong.

Lu pleaded guilty to two charges of sex with a minor. He stated he had no intention to take advantage of the girl who claimed and appeared to be a lot older than she really was./TISG
