Kuala Lumpur—Crown Prince Tunku Ismail was named regent of Johor on Sunday, August 11, by his father, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

This was announced on Sunday morning via the Crown Prince’s Twitter account, which read, “The regent has been entrusted by the sultan of Johor to execute the duties and administer the state of Johor, and shall have all the authority conferred upon the ruler and may apply these at any time.

Allah save the sultan.”

This is the second time for the Crown Prince to be appointed as regent. From April to May 2016, he was named regent during a brief span of time when the Sultan went away.

It is the duty of a regent to fulfill a monarch’s duties in his or her absence, or when he or she is ill or otherwise unable to perform his or her duties.

Why the Crown Prince was appointed as regent for this time has not been specified.

Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, the Menteri Besar (chief minister) of Johor, as well as Aminolhuda Hassan, the state’s Education, Human Resource, Science and Technology Committee chairman, attended the ceremony as well.

According to the Sultan, “Tunku Ismail has been given the trust to carry out his duties and administer Johor with the powers conferred on the Ruler and which can be exercised anytime.”

On Sunday, Sultan Ismail, along with around 2,000 Muslims, attended Hari Raya Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Pasir Pelangi. He was accompanied by Crown Prince Tunku Ismail and Datuk Dennis Muhammad Abdullah. After prayers, the Sultan, his son, and son in law did not leave at once but spent time with the other devotees.
