Tharman Shanmugaratnam is co-chair of UN advisory board on inequality report

Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Singapore’s Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies is co-chair to the 2019 Human Development Report advisory board. This announcement was disclosed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Wednesday (May 22).

Mr. Tharman will be working with Thomas Piketty, Professor at the Paris School of Economics and the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, and also co-director of the World Inequality Lab.

The advisory board composed of government officials and other industry experts, will be meeting in Paris next week to provide advice and guidance on the report, which is focused on inequality.

Mr Tharman on Thursday said that he was “glad to contribute” to the new Human Development Report with the rest of the international panel.

The 2019 UN Inequality Report

The report which is to be released in the last quarter of the year provides a broad and insightful perspective of the many types of inequality that are shaping the 21st Century.

It is said that the report will go beyond prevailing discussion centered on income disparities but would also consider inequalities using other dimensions such as health, education, access to technologies, and exposure to economic and climate-related impacts. It will employ fresh data and strategies that will underscore how inequality affects people’s lives. It will also be taking a long-term view towards 2030 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and beyond.
