Singapore – A new Peeping Tom incident has been reported at the Nanyang Technological University, making it the third case in three weeks.
The New Paper reported that the latest incident occurred at about 10:15 pm May 1 (Wednesday) in the women’s toilet on the third floor of Hall 4 in Block 22. A WhatsApp message has been circulating among students with the details of the incident.
An NTU representative said that investigations on the incident are ongoing.
Our pastoral care team has been providing support to her since the incident,” said the school representative.
A red stool was allegedly seen outside the toilet cubicles by students, and it is believed that this was the tool used by the suspect to get a better look at the targets.
According to the NTU spokesman, several security measures were implemented to prevent similar incidents.
“Access to female toilets in all halls is through key fobs,” he said. “In addition, there are CCTVs in common areas. Campus security officers patrol the residential halls and are told to check that all toilet doors with fob access are securely locked,” added the school representative.
It would seem that the new locks installed to the bathrooms were not effective in preventing voyeurism. Neither are patrolling security guards and CCTV cameras voyeur-proof.
A student told TNP it was only recently that the key fobs were implemented. The student felt that similar incidents would continue because punishments were not harsh enough.
The previous cases included a 22-year-old male student from Tamarind Hall who was suspected of having recorded a 20-year-old female student showering in the residences on April 18.
A few days later, a student dialed the emergency number “999” when he realized a 19-year-old man was taking photographs of him showering in Hall 3. The Peeping Tom was neither an NTU student or staff.

The university emphasized that it had zero-tolerance against sexual harassment and plans to introduce anti-harassment online modules in July, reported TNP.
NTU has joined NUS in the spotlight involving cases of voyeurism and the lack of effective and adequate school policies against sexual misconduct.
