Singaporeans are known for their strict work ethic and resolute drive to succeed. Because of this, Singaporeans are also among the most sleep-deprived and stressed-out workers according to a recent survey.

While most Singaporeans prefer to catch up on sleep during the weekends, others choose to relax and unwind outside their homes, and away from the humdrum city life. Thankfully, Singapore is surrounded by easily-accessible and verdant islands perfect for a quick weekend getaway. The best part is you don’t even have to spend that much or even bring out your passport for these trips.

Take a look at some of the best islands you can visit for that well-deserved weekend rest and recreation.

Sentosa

Sentosa is easily Singapore’s most popular island destination for both tourists and locals alike. You can visit the S.EA. Aquarium, stroll through Universal Studios, or just lounge around the many man-made beaches as you sip your favourite drink. While it can get crowded during the weekends, locals still choose Sentosa for the abundance of shopping and dining choices. You can purchase a Sentosa Island Pass in Vivocity Mall covering the entrance fee and bus rides around the island.

Pulau Ubin

Another well-known island, Pulau Ubin was a former granite mine turned eco-sanctuary teeming with diverse wildlife in the Chek Jawa wetlands. The rustic feel of the island is brought by the traditional-styled houses from the 1960s. You can choose to book a guided trek with the National Parks or bring your own bike to explore the island. To get to Pulau Ubin, take a bumboat from Changi Jetty.

St. John’s Island

This island holds a lot of history. St. John’s was a former quarantine island for the sickly and a detention center for political prisoners. Now, the island has been rehabilitated and is now home to diverse wildlife as well as many feline friends. You can go birdwatching, fishing, or swimming in the beach. Visitors can opt to rent one of the many holiday cabins or picnic spots across the white sandy beach of St. John’s island. To get to St. John’s Island, take the ferry from Marina South Pier.

Kusu Island

Kusu Island draws from its name from the myth of a giant tortoise that saved Chinese and Malay sailors lost at sea, and shipwrecked on the island. Kusu has lots of historical sites and religious shrines. The island is a popular destination for visitors seeking solitude or folks fulfilling pilgrimages, especially during the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. To visit Kusu Island, take the ferry from the Marina South Pier.

Coney Island

The verdant scenery and paved walkways on Coney Island is a favourite among hikers, and bikers. Since there are no shopping centres or big condominium complexes on the island, it is a perfect destination for visitors seeking a quiet escape from the city. Locals and their beloved dogs also organise, and hold pack walks in Coney Island Park. You can choose to ride the bus or book a taxi to get to the island./TISG
