11-year-old twins found dead in Upper Bukit Timah playground, Gurkha alerted, father arrested

Singapore – The bodies of two children were found near a playground in Upper Bukit Timah on Friday night (Jan 21). The elite Gurkha Contingent and public transport drivers were alerted to the incident, leading to the arrest of the same man who called the authorities.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) received a call for assistance on Jan 21 at around 6:25 pm by a man at a playground along Greenridge Crescent.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the man’s two 11-year-old sons were found lying motionless in the vicinity of the playground.

The two boys were pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.

A Facebook user uploaded photos to the Complaint Singapore Facebook page on Saturday (Jan 22), noting that the Gurkha Contingent was spotted in Upper Bukit Timah.

The Gurkha Contingent are elite soldiers from Nepal recruited by different parties like the British Army, Nepalese Army, Indian Army, Gurkha Contingent Singapore, UN’s peacekeeping force and other war zones worldwide.

Following the incident, taxi drivers also received an alert message which was confirmed by media as genuine.

Taxi drivers were advised to keep a lookout for a “tan-looking” man “of unknown race” in a grey shirt and sports shoes. The man was allegedly last seen on Jan 21 at 3 pm along Greenridge Crescent.

“The police followed up on all possible leads and conducted round-the-clock investigations, which eventually led to the arrest of the man,” said SPF, referring to the father who made the call.

On Sunday (Jan 23), SPF announced in a Facebook post that the 48-year-old father was arrested for his suspected involvement in the death of his sons.

The man will be charged in court on Jan 24 with murder under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code 1871.

The maximum sentence for murder is the death penalty.

The police classified the case as unnatural deaths, and investigations are ongoing.

“This is a grave tragedy and unthinkable, especially to anyone who is a parent,” said Member of Parliament Sim Ann (PAP-Holland-Bukit Timah GRC) in a Facebook post.

“I know the news is deeply shocking and upsetting to our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the children who have lost their lives so tragically,” she added./TISG
