Woman who fell from bus when doors closed while she was trying to exit not badly hurt, bus driver ‘strictly’ disciplined

Singapore — The woman who fell to the ground at a bus interchange as the bus doors closed on her while she was alighting, is said to be not seriously injured.

She was treated in hospital as an outpatient after the accident happened at Hougang Interchange.

The bus captain who apparently didn’t check properly before closing the exit doors has had “strict disciplinary action” taken against him, said SBS Transit.

In a video that’s been widely spread online, the woman could be seen making her way out of the bus, with one foot on the kerb, the other still inside the bus and her hand still holding onto a railing inside the bus.

The video was posted on TikTok, to the account @gopnik.sg. As the doors close on the woman, she can be seen pounding on the doors to alert people to her plight. The video shows the doors appearing fully closed with the woman hanging on outside until she falls to the ground, with her left foot trapped.

Within moments, the doors reopen and two men in SBS Transit uniforms come to help her.

It has not been a good spell for SBS Transit in recent months.

In September, a man fell when he was flung forward as the bus he was in had to brake suddenly to avoid a car. It happened as he got up to alight from his front seat, and left him with head injuries and multiple fractures that also punctured his lungs. He died after a week of fighting for his life in ICU.

In August this year, a woman died after she was hit by a bus and pinned under the vehicle. It happened in Ang Mo Kio.

In response to media queries on the latest accident, Tammy Tan, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, SBS Transit, said:

“The actions of our Bus Captain are most unacceptable. It is fortunate that the lady wasn’t seriously injured and received outpatient hospital treatment at the hospital.

We are in touch with her family to extend our care and concern and have offered our assistance too. We do wish her a speedy and complete recovery. Meanwhile, we have taken strict disciplinary action against the Bus Captain and will be monitoring his performance closely.”
