Video of severe bed bug infestation outside AMK Hub seating area goes viral

SINGAPORE: A video appearing to show a severe bedbug infestation at a public seating area outside AMK Hub has gone viral, prompting concern and unease among Singaporeans online.

The clip, posted on Reddit earlier this week by user u/uandurfader, shows a close-up view between the slats of a wooden bench. The footage reveals what appears to be a dense cluster of bedbugs inhabiting the narrow gaps. The camera then pulls back to show the otherwise unremarkable seating area, highlighting how easily the issue could go unnoticed.

Bedbugs are parasitic insects that feed on human blood, typically at night. Their bites can lead to skin rashes, allergic reactions, and psychological distress, particularly due to the anxiety and sleep disruption they can cause.

Infestations are notoriously difficult to eliminate, especially in homes. Bedbugs can hide in tiny crevices, reproduce quickly, and survive for extended periods without feeding. Effective treatment often requires a combination of high-heat methods and specialised chemical applications, usually carried out over multiple sessions.

Treatments are costly, and even then, complete eradication is not always guaranteed.

Online reactions to the video have been swift, with many expressing shock and disgust. Several commenters described the situation as a “new fear unlocked” and shared that they are now worried about the possibility of encountering bedbugs in public spaces.

One Reddit user, u/businesshornet5086, wrote, “This is genuinely one of my worst fears in Singapore because bed bugs are an absolute nightmare to get rid of once they get into your home. People don’t realise you can pick them up from sitting somewhere for 10 minutes and then spend the next three months and thousands of dollars dealing with the aftermath.”

Those who have used the seating areas are advised to check their belongings and clothes carefully for the insects and to throw their clothing into a high heat dryer cycle as a precautionary measure.

Some netizens also claimed to have seen similar infestations in public areas in other estates, including Yishun, raising broader concerns about pest control in shared spaces.

A spokesperson for Brand Cellar, the company representing AMK Hub, has shared with The Independent Singapore that the seating area does not come under the mall’s purview or management.
