Viral video: Johor Mentri Besar Osman Sapian stopped from riding in Proton Saga with Dr. M and Sultan Ibrahim of Johor

Last week, when Johor’s Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar drove Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Tun Mahathir Mohammad to the airport in a classic Proton Saga after their meeting it made the news, since the meeting, the drive and the car itself were all significant.

What has come to the light lately is what occurred just before the historic drive, which was not good for one particular leader from Johor.

A video clip making the rounds on social media shows both Sultan Ibrahim and Dr. Mahathir getting into the front seats of the car, amidst numerous security guards and members of the press taking photos of the event.

But Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian opens the back door of the vehicle, behind the passenger side, ostensibly to get in as well. It looks as though he makes several attempts to enter, but is not allowed by the detail, presumably Sultan Ibrahim’s military aide de camp.

Osman is seen speaking briefly to the Sultan and the Prime Minister. He later turns away as the Sultan and Dr. Mahathir prepare to drive off.

Dr. Mahathir met with Sultan Ibrahim on Thursday, January 10. The meeting lasted for 90 minutes, and ended in a surprising but pleasant twist, with the Prime Minister being driven to Senai International Airport personally by the Sultan himself.

The Sultan used a first-generation Proton Saga, given by Dr. Mahathir to the father of Sultan Ibrahim more than 30 years ago in 1985, to bring the Prime Minister to the airport.

The video, which many saw as an embarrassment to Datuk Osman Sapian, was uploaded on the Facebook page called Ops Johor (@opsjohor) on the evening of the same day of the meeting.

As of this writing, the clip has been seen almost 330,000 times, and shared more than one thousand times, with netizens seemingly delighting in sharing Sapian’s embarrassing moment.
