Shocking footage of several men attacking a group of women at a restaurant in China has gone viral worldwide. Whatsonweibo.com reported that the footage from surveillance video from the BBQ restaurant has set Chinese social media abuzz. It shows a group of three women eating at a table when they are approached by a man, who then touches the back of one of the women.

She reacted by pushing him away and raising her voice at him. After he tries to touch her again, she slaps his hand away. The man, angered, hits her face. One of the woman’s friends then grabs a beer bottle and smashes him over the head with it. The man, together with two other men, proceed to pull her away and begin to beat her up. The third woman then tries to help, but ends up getting kicked by one of the men.

Other men also joined the fray, coming in from outside the restaurant to attack the women, who are seen on video showed to the ground, kicking and throwing a chair.

The first woman who fought back against the man’s unwanted attention was also dragged outside and brutally beaten, with passersby and other diners doing nothing to intervene.

Footage of the attack has also spread on Twitter (content warning: violence, assault) and a picture of the woman’s bloodied face as she lay on a stretcher also went viral online.

The Chinese police arrested nine men on Saturday after the assault, which occurred at 2:40 pm on June 10 (Friday) in Tangshan, a city in the northeast of Hebei province, according to a statement released by officials on Chinese social media.

Two of the women were hospitalised for their injuries, which officials described as non-life-threatening. They were also reported to be in stable condition.

Two other women involved were slightly injured in the assault.

The brutal attack has led to calls for misogyny and the ill-treatment of women to be addressed.
