It is now confirmed that the microblogging platform’s tweet character limit has increased from 280 to 4,000.
The Economic Times reports that Twitter CEO Elon Musk confirmed the update when a user asked Musk, “Elon is it true that Twitter is set to increase the character limit from 280 to 4000?” Musk’s reply was, “YES!”
But not so many users were happy about the increase. One user says, “It would be a big mistake. Twitter’s purpose is to provide fast news. If this happens, a lot of real information is lost.”
A comment from another unhappy user said, “4000? That’s an essay, not a tweet.”
Not only character limit
Benzinga reports that Musk’s upcoming campaigns also consist of end-to-end encryption for DMs, a “wallet prototype” supporting crypto deposits and withdrawals, bringing “GIF profile picture” back, and removing the option to create “Moments.”
In addition to the increase in character limit, it was reported that Twitter added an option to upload high-quality videos without a Twitter Blue subscription.

He also said the microblogging site is working on a new software update that allows users to see why their account has been “shadowbanned.”
Not the first time
This isn’t the billionaire’s first statement stating that Twitter will increase its character count. In November, Musk responded to an inquiry by tweeting that expanding Twitter’s character limit was on the list of things he wants to do. This was about the 1000-character cap rather than the more recently proposed limit of 4000.
Regardless of the exact number, it looks as though Twitter is likely to get a significant character count increase in the days to come.
However, there is no sure indication of when the update will take place, and it might not be Musk’s highest priority. Mashable reports that Twitter has been publicly struggling since he took over as CEO, with quick implementations of new features and executing mass layoffs leading to extensive chaos. He was even reported threatening to sue Twitter employees who would speak to the press.
