Seoul – To the dismay of many who follow the romance of celebrity couple Song Joong Ki, 33, and Song Hye Kyo, 37, ever since Descendent of the Sun, the couple has recently filed for a divorce.
On June 27, a legal representative of Song Joong Ki disclosed to the press that the day before, his team filed a request for divorce on behalf of the actor with Seoul’s Family Court.
According to allkpop, Song Joong Ki forwarded a message through his representative which said, “First, I want to deliver my apologies to many of you who love and cherish me, for such unfortunate news. I have decided to move forward in a divorce with Song Hye Kyo.”
He added that he wished for a civil approach to the separation.
“Rather than lengthening the process by considering each other’s faults and deriding each other, I hope to complete the divorce amicably.”
Lastly, he asked for the understanding and support of his fans through this difficult time.
“I ask for your understanding in the fact that it is difficult to reveal the specific details of our personal lives, and I promise to overcome these damages and do my best as an actor in my production roles from now on.”
Although the actor refrained from revealing details on the divorce, noting that it was a matter of privacy, Song Hye Kyo’s agency said that the reason was a difference in personalities.
The official statement from United Artists Agency (UAA), the actress’ agency, were as follows:
“Hi, this is UAA representing Song Hye-kyo.
First, we apologize for delivering an unfortunate news.
Hye-kyo is currently going through divorce proceedings with her husband, following a careful consideration.
The reason for divorce is a difference in personality. The decision came because the pair could not overcome the difference.
We cannot check out the further details due to the privacy concerns. We ask for your understanding about this.
In addition, please refrain from making sensational reports and leaving speculative comments, for the sake of the actors.
We apologize for fueling worries. We will strive for the better in the future.
Thank you.”
The couple tied the knot less than two years ago on October 31, 2017, after a fairytale romance blossomed during their roles in the mega-blockbuster Korean drama Descendants of the Sun.
Song Joong Ki played special forces captain Yoo Si Jin while Song Hye Kyo played doctor Kang Mo Yeon.
