Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar appoints Crown Prince as regent of Johor

Kuala Lumpur—Crown Prince Tunku Ismail was named regent of Johor on Sunday, August 11, by his father, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

This was announced on Sunday morning via the Crown Prince’s Twitter account, which read, “The regent has been entrusted by the sultan of Johor to execute the duties and administer the state of Johor, and shall have all the authority conferred upon the ruler and may apply these at any time.

Allah save the sultan.”

This is the second time for the Crown Prince to be appointed as regent. From April to May 2016, he was named regent during a brief span of time when the Sultan went away.

It is the duty of a regent to fulfill a monarch’s duties in his or her absence, or when he or she is ill or otherwise unable to perform his or her duties.

Why the Crown Prince was appointed as regent for this time has not been specified.

The Crown Prince’s appointment was carried out in an official ceremony at the Istana Pasir Pelangi, photos of which were featured in the Facebook account of the Sultan.

The other children the Sultan were also present at the ceremony, as well as Datuk Dennis Muhammad Abdullah, who is married to one of the Sultan’s daughters.

Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, the Menteri Besar (chief minister) of Johor, as well as Aminolhuda Hassan, the state’s Education, Human Resource, Science and Technology Committee chairman, attended the ceremony as well.

According to the Sultan, “Tunku Ismail has been given the trust to carry out his duties and administer Johor with the powers conferred on the Ruler and which can be exercised anytime.”

On Sunday, Sultan Ismail, along with around 2,000 Muslims, attended Hari Raya Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Pasir Pelangi. He was accompanied by Crown Prince Tunku Ismail and Datuk Dennis Muhammad Abdullah. After prayers, the Sultan, his son, and son in law did not leave at once but spent time with the other devotees.

Last month, the Crown Prince became a father for the third time when his wife, Che Puan Khaleeda Bustamam, gave birth to their second son in the early morning hours of July 17.

He posted a birth announcement on Facebook that said, “Alhamdulillah. HH Che Puan Khaleeda safely delivered a Prince. Allah Peliharakan Sultan.”

Later that day he posted a photo of himself, his wife, and newborn child captioned, “Welcome Home my Boy.”

The 35-year-old Crown Prince and 27-year-old Che Puan Khaleeda married almost five years ago, in October 2014. By the following June, they had their first child, a daughter. Tunku Khalsom Aminah Sofiah Ibni Tunku Ismail, nicknamed Lili, is now 4 and was born on June 25, 2015.

The doting father posted photos and videos of Lili’s Disney-themed birthday two months ago.

Less than two years later Che Puan Khaleeda gave birth to their first son, Tunku Iskandar Abdul Jalil Abu Bakar Ibrahim Ibni Tunku Ismail, the heir to the throne of Johor. He was born in October 2017./ TISG
