Migrant worker who was deported has 7 family members depending on his income, but MOM says he made misleading, false & provocative public posts

In an open letter on Wednesday (Jun 22), migrant worker Zakir Hossain Khokan, 43, wrote that he was deported from Singapore “with no clear reason and plenty of confusion”.

Hossain – a prize-winning poet who is also a former speaker at TEDx Singapore, community organizer, writer, freelance journalist, editor, and photographer – outlined in his Facebook post that after working in and contributing to Singapore for 19 years, he received a notice from his company’s Human Resource (HR) department that his work permit had expired and could not be renewed. The system reflected that he had “an adverse record with a government agency”.

Makansutra founder KF Seetoh took to social media on Tuesday (Jun 21) to update that the bulk of chosen local hawkers and chefs had already begun setting up their stalls.

“The bulk of our hawkers n chefs setting up their Urban Hawker outpost in Times Sq, New York”, the man behind the idea, Mr Seetoh wrote. He added that they were already in New York.

POLL: S’poreans prefer flexible work arrangements over 4-day work week, though many admit extra rest day would benefit their mental health

 

A new survey shows that nearly two-thirds of employees prefer flexible work arrangements over a four-day work week. The over 1000 employees polled are from several industries from information technology (IT) to retail.

The online poll from US firm Qualtrics, carried out last month, showed that the respondents felt concerned over the long working hours a four-day work week would entail. However, many of the respondents acknowledged that an additional day of rest in the week would be beneficial for their mental health.

A member of the public took to social media to highlight their neighbour’s disruptive behaviour in hopes of finding a solution.

“I’m not sure if I can help my neighbours this way but believe it or not, even the Singapore Police Force can’t do anything, and Housing and Development Board (HDB) also wash hands of everything,” wrote Facebook page Complaint Singapore member Syafiq Sadiq on Wednesday (June 22).

Workers’ Party says it will “continue to argue against the GST hike”

The Workers’ Party (WP) announced with a series of infographics on Wednesday (Jun 22) evening that it does not support a Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike.

This comes a day after Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Tuesday (Jun 21) that an upcoming increase to the GST will not be delayed, despite rising inflation. Mr Wong also announced a new S$1.5 billion support package to help Singaporeans with rising costs.
