Making a diversion from acting Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae is now trying out filmmaking with the spy thriller Hunt.
Hunt is something that he produced and acted, directed, and wrote in.
Lee’s first foray into the world of filmmaking was screened at the world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Hunt revolves around two South Korean spies who are assigned to uncover a North Korean mole and end up investigating each other instead. The film is a fast-paced action thriller.
The 49-year-old actor stars opposite his long time friend and business partner Jung Woo-sung. He credits his 30-year career in acting with helping him behind the lens.
“I have acted in many different genres and I could remember scenes I’d shot as an actor that were difficult to film or that didn’t come out as I expected,” said Lee in a Reuters report.
“I tried to remember those scenes when I was writing the script to ensure I could be as effective as possible when directing.”
Lee has been coasting on the success of the Netflix series Squid Game which became the streaming service’s most popular show globally.
“I am so thankful that I am making my directorial debut during this renaissance of Korean culture,” Lee said.
“I hope to get to meet international audiences and fans more often with other movies and content as well.”
The versatile and acclaimed actor has received numerous accolades throughout his career including a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, six Baeksang Arts Awards, and nominations for a Golden Globe Award and a Gotham Award.
When asked which aspect of Hunt he enjoyed the most, Lee said it was definitely acting.
“Of course acting. I’m an actor. It’s my identity. So, I just loved acting the most.”
