TikToks from a couple who go by @wethecurioustravelers showed how they avoided paying for “crazy expensive” meals and “saved a ton of money” on their trip to Europe, especially to Switzerland, one of the most expensive countries in the world.

The couple went to “Germany, Swiss, Milan” with an extra bag full of mostly prepackaged Asian food and an electric cooker, which meant that not only did they save on meals, but they were able to enjoy a taste of home while overseas.

In one comment, they explained that this was their second time in Switzerland, and after the first trip, decided they had enough of the food there.

“When food in Switzerland is $$$ even for a simple dish of nuggets,” they captioned an Aug 31 TikTok, explaining in the video that one meal at least $30.

Even though wine, they noted, is cheaper than in Singapore.

The solution: “You can cook and eat in,” they wrote, listing that they cooked laksa with prawn egg and beef patty, ba kut teh, ma la xiang guo, cabbage with eggs, curry chicken, fried Maggi with chicken cheese schnitzel, croissant from mart cooked with sausage and spinach, Japanese curry with scrambled eggs, and A1 abalone instant noodle egg x sausage.

In another video that went viral, they explained how they manage to avoid “even more ridiculously priced mediocre food in touristy spots” and showed pre-departure packing photos with their suitcase filled with food packages of “comfort Asian food we like.”

Food can be crazy expensive in Switzerland so we brought a full suitcase of food there and cooked our own meals 😂 no regrets for the extra baggage tho! #traveltok #travelguide #foodiesg #travelhacking #switzerland

“Definitely worth the extra baggage!,” they wrote, “Don’t you think so?“

They posted another TikTok in response to a commenter who had said that grocery shipping in Switzerland is cheap, showing 4 prawns that cost $9.50, a pack of chilies that cost $5.95, and a coke can that cost $4.50.

Yet another TikTok was dedicated to the electric pot they brought, as commenters had gotten curious about it.

Some netizens responding to the videos said that the couple could have just stayed home.

Some commenters were delighted, however.

Another commenter said they did the same thing when they traveled.

Some commenters backed them up and confirmed that food in Switzerland is really pricey.

One netizen even shared that they brought Army MRE (ready to eat) meals on their vacation.
