S$450 for carrot cake?! Man accidentally sends 100× the price to Chomp Chomp hawker

SINGAPORE: A man accidentally paid 100x the price of a black carrot cake. He sent a total of S$450 instead of just S$4.50, and his mistake has made him viral.

On TikTok, the man shared his experience with a caption: “POV: you accidentally paid S$450 for a plate of black carrot cake.” His video showed the storefront of Hong Sha Li, a carrot cake stall at Chomp Chomp Food Centre in Serangoon Gardens. He also showed his $450 transaction as proof.

With this, netizens expressed their thoughts, opinions, and even the same experiences. Many of the netizens were curious if he got his refund, which thankfully, he did.

A netizen shared that he also had a similar encounter when he paid S$250 for vitamin water.

Another netizen recalled that she once paid S$1 for their lunch instead of S$100, which got a response from the man who jokingly stated that he wanted to be like that.

That carrot cake had better be made of gold to be worth S$450,” a comment also declared.

Another commenter argued that this is a reason why paying cash is better.

“Always been curious what’s the best thing to do in such a scenario – after alerting the counter staff, would they have the authority to return my excess funds?” asked a Redditor.

This comment gained a response stating: “ I don’t know how they do it, but where I used to work got a phone specifically for PayNow/QR code, can see the transactions coming in and out, and, if needed, can just click on the said transaction, key in the pin, swipe to refund back to the customer. Should reflect in a day or so.”

“I did once for my kopi. $150 instead of $1.50. Waited for a while to get a refund,” another comment shared.

“Moral of the story is to check, double-check the decimal point before transferring. Don’t rush. Don’t care about the people behind you,” a netizen shared.

A Redditor also suggested a way to prevent this scenario from happening: “Pro-tip: keep your spending balance below $30 so you don’t even make the mistake of transferring $45.”
