Police urge compliance with alcohol ban, with huge crowds expected at Little India during Deepavali weekend

SINGAPORE: Large crowds are expected to gather in Little India over the Deepavali weekend, and the police have announced tighter crowd and traffic control measures to ensure public safety.

In a statement, the police reminded the public that the Serangoon Road area is expected to be particularly crowded on Sunday (Oct 19) and the eve of Deepavali. Members of the public are urged to stay vigilant, keep an eye on their personal belongings, and exercise patience while moving through crowded areas.

Heavy traffic congestion is also anticipated in the vicinity. Drivers are advised to avoid Serangoon Road and use alternative routes where possible. The police further reminded motorists to drive cautiously and follow traffic directions.

To facilitate crowd management, the footpath on Birch Road in front of Angullia Mosque will be closed from 4 p.m. on Sunday to 4 a.m. the following day. Pedestrians can use alternative footpaths near Kitchener Link or Baboo Lane. If necessary, authorities may also close the footpath along Campbell Lane.

The police also highlighted that Little India and Geylang have been designated as liquor control zones. Drinking in public places within these areas is prohibited from 10:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct 17) until 7 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct 21).

Those found consuming alcohol in public during this period may face fines of up to $1,500. Repeat offenders risk a fine of up to $3,000, imprisonment of up to four and a half months, or both. Businesses selling alcohol are also reminded that illegal sales could result in the revocation of their liquor licences.

The police additionally cautioned the public against the illegal use of fireworks. Last year, 24 individuals were investigated for offences involving the possession, discharge, and importation of fireworks. Members of the public are urged not to light multiple sparklers simultaneously, as doing so may lead to fires or injuries.
