MP Seah Kian Peng on dealing with rising costs: “eating in is a lot cheaper than eating out wherever you may go”

In Parliament on Tuesday, July 10, Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing spoke about the multi-dimensional issue that is cost of living, and how the measure of how prices change over time was just one aspect of it

Marine Parade GRC Member of Parliament Seah Kian Peng got in on the debate as well and gave Singaporeans “useful tips” on how to deal with rising costs of living.

He said, “I just want to say that in addition, I think one key aspect in how – perhaps it is within the eight but I didn’t hear it – is about consumer education.”

Mr Seah continued, “Consumer education, I think frankly, I think all of us know that eating in is a lot cheaper than eating out wherever you may go. So things like that may be simple tips but I think it’s useful tips which I think could be incorporated within the eight tips that you have”.

While his intentions may have been well, netizens took to social media to mock Mr Seah.

It was shared on Facebook page ‘All Singapore Stuff’ and it received 72 reactions and 63 comments.

The original post, by netizen Bruce Wee read:
“PAP elite giving TIPS on coping with HIGH COSTS of LIVING:

“I think all of us know that eating IN is a lot cheaper than eating OUT wherever you may go.
So things like that may be simple tips but I think it’s USEFUL tips…”
~ PAP MP Seah Kian Ping cum NTUC CEO”

Netizens were rather riled up by his comments and expressed that he did not seem to understand their plight at all.
