Labubu doll is the newest and cutest ‘volunteer’ at Sengkang that got netizens charmed and their hearts stolen

SINGAPORE: Netizens have been charmed by the debut of a popular doll at Sengkang, referred to as the “latest and cutest volunteer”. ICYMI, Labubu is a female elf from Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung, part of his popular story series, The Monsters.

In October 2023, Labubu plush charms were launched and became a hit, especially after Lisa from the K-pop supergroup Blackpink was seen with them on her bags.

On Sunday (Sept 22), former Senior Minister of State for Health and Transport Dr Lam Pin Min started featuring a Labubu doll wearing an all-white ensemble with the PAP logo on posts on Facebook and TikTok.

That day, he and the other members of his team distributed groceries to the senior citizens at Compassvale Crescent. “We have always looked out for and will continue to care for our seniors and underprivileged in the community!

We also welcome #Labubu, our latest and cutest volunteer, to join us in our mission to serve with humility and love!” wrote Mr Lam, who even posed with the doll in matching all-white.

Netizens appeared to be charmed by Mr Lam’s new mascot, as evidenced by the more than 113,000 views his TikTok video has received.

It shows members of the Sengkang team, also dressed all in white, passing the doll to one another before the last one in the line places it in front of bags of groceries that were meant for distribution to the seniors.

Comments on Mr Lam’s video were all about the Labubu doll.

“OMG lbb join the group,” one crowed.

One wrote that they wanted the doll but without the white clothes.

A TikTok user joked they would vote for the Labubu to be their MP.

Another asked if the former Senior Minister would give away the doll and groceries.

However, this would be a tall order indeed, as these dolls are not cheap. A quick look shows that some retailers on Shoppee sell for as much as S$100.

Bagaholic Boy said in an article last month that Labubu dolls “sell out the moment they hit the shelves”.

“But if you can get your hands on them, individual blind boxes retail at SGD24.90 at Pop Mart,” he added, advising would-be buyers to buy them “from a reputable source to save yourself from any heartache”.

“Why do I kinda need this unironically?” asked another.

Mr Lam’s inclusion of the Labubu doll on his social media posts and on-ground activities has even been covered on media sites such as the South China Morning Post and Malay Mail.  /TISG
