In light of the increasing costs, KF Seetoh told hawkers to “just raise” prices in order to sustain themselves.

In a Facebook post on Sunday (Sept 4), he wrote, “Cost of that tin of oil was $17 pre.pandemic, today it’s $40. .among many rising cost in this post covid reality, way more than to 10% reported here”.

Food prices have not just gone up, the founder of Makansutra also cited the prices of taxis, private hire care rides and BTOs having gone up, “touching almost 900k just this week”.

“And products in the shelves have shrunk . Did it warrant a big article n voice the people’s concern…nope”, he added.

Mr Seetoh cautioned these hawkers that if they end up closing shop because of their inability to fairly raise prices, then no one would care.

“Do what you need to survive and be fair. Folks complaining abt a 0.1% increase shd ask their bosses for a pay rise as they work so hard, just like the hawkers. If u dun deserve that pay rise, then work harder or go Google for cheapest makan in Sg”, Mr Seetoh wrote.

In his post, he shared the news article where a Coffee shop zi char chain dropped its service fee after a backlash from customers. The owner said that businesses were under pressure as “costs of ingredients such as sugar and oil have jumped at least 10 per cent”.

Over the weekend, the Makansutra founder and Singapore food guru weighed in on the scandal surrounding national swimmer Joseph Schooling, who was caught taking cannabis overseas earlier this year.

In a Sept 3 (Saturday) Facebook post, Mr Seetoh wrote, Criticize Schooling only if you are Perfect n never made mistakes or slip ups in your life. Otherwise……”

“If this becomes n unforgiving society..what would u really cherish ahead..even fr yr kids, who’s brought up by social media?” he added in a comment.

The Olympic medallist said he had taken cannabis in May when he was on short-term disruption from full-time National Service (NS) to train and participate in the Southeast Asian Games.
