‘Jobs are very hard to obtain now’: Netizens tell Singaporean working in Canada not to return amid bleak job market

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean currently working in Toronto, Canada, as a price analyst has sparked conversation online after revealing that he’s thinking about moving back home to Singapore.

On Monday (Oct 13), he took to Reddit’s “Ask Singapore” forum to explain that he has spent roughly seven years in Toronto, four of which were dedicated to earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, followed by three years working as a price analyst.

Seeking advice from fellow Redditors, he asked, “Is it even realistic for me to think that I can continue my career back home, or my experience and degree from Canada is like toilet paper and I should instead restart my career from scratch?”

“Jobs are very hard to obtain now.”

Unfortunately, the replies on Reddit were anything but reassuring. Many warned him that the job market is extremely bleak at the moment, with even highly qualified and experienced candidates struggling to find work.

One wrote, “I advise you to stay in Canada; jobs are very hard to obtain now. It seems like Singapore has produced too many university graduates.”

Another commented, “If you have a job there now, stay there. If you don’t have one, find one there or in the nearby US states. More and more graduates are finding it difficult to even get a reply when they send out CVs.”

A third remarked, “Come back and you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”

Others, however, said that if he really wants to go through with his plans, he should first secure a job or, at the very least, submit a large number of applications before boarding a plane home.

One added, “Find a job first! Else, it can take you 6-9 months to land one nowadays for experienced hires.”

As for his qualifications, one user said, “To be honest, with a math degree, you can do quite a bit of things… like statistics/math teacher or tap into your analyst soft skills and transition to BA/DA.”

“But if you were to start from scratch, be prepared to get lowballed, or if you’re keen, there are programs that will train you AWS /GOOGLE/Generation traineeship programs that will help with placement, etc.”

In other news, a man who aspires to be the ‘house husband’ in his future family has been slammed online for stating that he wants a “girlfriend in Singapore who earns more than him”.

In a post on the r/SingaporeRaw subreddit on Thursday (Oct 2), he wrote: “Why do I have to earn more than my girlfriend? I want a girlfriend who earns more than me. If I want to have children in the future, it’s pretty much a necessity for her to earn more than me to support us, since I’m not earning much.”
