Singapore – Socialite, turned entrepreneur Jamie Chua shared having sold several of her Birkin bags amid her divorce to “feed her children.”

“Many people might think that I’m not very private, but actually I am, and there are many aspects of my life that I do not share on social media, and I like to keep it that way,” said Ms Chua.

She was interviewed by Singapore-based American socialite Paige Parker in her podcast episode titled “Beyond the Birkins”, uploaded on Sept 20.

Contrary to past reports, Ms Chua revealed that she had met her ex-husband Nurdian Cuaca through a friend and not on an SQ flight when she was still a flight attendant.

“I did not snag my passenger,” she added, laughing.

Ms Chua also touched on what she considers the biggest misconception people have about her regarding her fortune.

She explained that her wealth was not entirely from her ex-husband after the divorce.

“The truth is that I’ve played a significant role in the success that we both accomplished with our business.”

“People also don’t realise the trials and tribulations that we went through during the early years of our marriage, and even after our divorce, I continued to work hard to enjoy the lifestyle I have today,” said Ms Chua, who owns a beauty line.

Included in the interview was Ms Chua talking about her Hermès bag collection.

“When I got my first Hermès Birkin (at the age of 31), I felt that it really was a good quality handbag, and besides being good quality, it is also very user-friendly,” she said, noting it suited her lifestyle well.

When asked who inspires her, Ms Chua responded that wild animals inspire her a lot.

“My chickens inspire me every day because just looking at how they live and the kind of fun they’re having is just so pure and simple. It’s just inspirational that way.”

Ms Chua is a farming enthusiast and enjoys gardening as well as tending to her chickens.

“When I see my chicken laying an egg, it makes me very happy,” she said, adding that it brought her more joy than “buying a new bag.”

Another fact that Ms Chua revealed was that she sold several of her prized handbags during her public divorce with her ex-husband.

“Well, during my divorce, I did sell many Birkin bags to feed my children. They keep their value very well and could be one of the best investments that I’ve made for some of them.” /TISG
