Is Singapore all work and no play? Viral TikTok sparks fierce debate

SINGAPORE: Singapore is back in the spotlight — but this time, it’s not for its legendary hawker food or the thrill of the Formula 1 night race. A Japanese TikToker, @naofromjapan_, sparked a lively online debate after describing the Lion City as “less of a place to play and more of a place to make money.”

In her short video, which has racked up over 100,000 views, she painted Singapore as a city where salaries might be higher than in Japan, but layoffs are common and life can feel, well, a bit dull. Her comment struck a chord — and a nerve — with Singaporeans.

A city obsessed with success?

Countless residents approved of her, calling Singapore “materialistic” and “too focused on money.” For them, the city-state’s unremitting quest for achievement leaves little room for idle time or for creative pursuits. With the increasing cost of living and a fiercely competitive work environment, it’s easy to see why some consider the Lion City in this light.

But not everyone sees it that way

Others rushed to defend the city. Singapore lovers and supporters talked about Singapore’s safety and its secure environment, sanitation, and productivity — the exact reasons why they chose to stay. They also stressed the pulsating food scene and cultural diversity, contending that these are the pluses strangers usually disregard.

Still, familiar complaints popped up — the relentless humidity, the strict rules, and the sense that some aspects of daily life never quite ease up. “You never really get used to it,” one local admitted.

Love it or leave it?

The TikToker herself didn’t end on a negative note. “I still love Singapore though,” she added — a sentiment that resonated with many viewers, even the critics.

So, is Singapore just a money-driven machine, or is it a safe, convenient city with world-class perks? As the comments keep rolling in, one thing is clear — the debate over what truly defines the Lion City is far from over.
