“I have no eyes behind me, sir,” SDA tells man who accuses her of not being observant enough

Singapore — Amid the recent rise of Covid cases, it hasn’t been easy to be a Safe Distancing Ambassador (SDA).

In one incident, a woman tried to pull the mask off of one, and in another, a man accused an SDA of not doing her job.

On Sunday, Sept 12, a video of a man claiming to be “public-spirited” confronting a female SDA was uploaded on the YouTube and Instagram pages of Singapore Incidents, where it has been viewed tens of thousands of times.

In the video, the man, who is off-camera, can be heard telling the woman that she isn’t being observant and that she needs to do her job properly.

Judging from their conversation, what sparked the confrontation was that another man was observed at Kallang Wave Mall either without a mask or was not properly masked.

But the man had apparently not been in the SDA’s direct view.

“I have no eyes behind me, sir,” she answers him.

“He just walked past your side. You don’t need to have eyes behind you,” the man then tells the SDA.

“He was less than a meter behind you. You need to observe people around you.”

“Sir, please do not record me,” the SDA tells the man, holding her hand in front of him. “I know you are recording.”

“Yes, because you are not doing your work,” he tells her heatedly.

She answers by telling him she does not “want to engage with him anymore,” and backs away from the man, who did not stop recording the exchange.

But he continues to speak to her, saying, “So, you are not doing your job. You take a public-spirited bystander to bring to your attention that someone was not following safe management measures, correct?

And you keep on finding reasons why you did not do it.”

The SDA remains calm and polite, and tells him again, “Thank you for your feedback, sir, I am going to disengage.”

“Good,” the man says.

The video ends with the man telling her that he is going to “lodge a report” against her.

According to Enterprise Singapore, which oversees the SDAs assigned to shopping malls all over the country, the incident is now under investigation. /TISG
