Sengkang – He Ting Ru, the elected Member of Parliament for the Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) posted on Facebook regarding the People Association’s Edusave Awards for students.

Ms He addressed the issue in her post and said that members of the Workers’ Party are not involved in the process of giving out the Edusave Awards as they are parked under the purview of the People’s Association.

“Consequently, elected MPs who do not belong to the ruling party are not asked to give out the awards to our residents — we are not Grassroots Advisors for our constituencies,” she said.

MOE Edusave Awards are given out to help equalize educational opportunities and motivate pupils to excel in school. Awards are given to acknowledge students with exemplary grades, good character, leadership qualities, good progress in grades, or performing students who belong to a low-income household.

Netizens who commented on Ms He’s post expressed appreciation for the elected Sengkang GRC MP’s efforts and were dismayed over how Edusave awards are given out. They felt bad for the students and for the elected MPs who couldn’t give out an official award to their constituents.

Ms He encouraged residents to not hesitate to get in touch with them if they want to receive letters of recognition from them. Ms He quoted her colleague Jamus Lim and said, “We remain available for our residents even if it’s to drop in to say hi!” /TISG
