HDB: Man splashes water, lets it drop to lower floors, resident says ‘this is why your laundry never dry’

Singapore — A steady and unwanted stream of water trickling down an HDB (Housing & Development Board) apartment block has spurred residents to grumble about being unable to hang their laundry out to dry.

“Whoever lives in West Plain Block 467C, unit xx-559 and find out your laundry never dry, this is why,” wrote Facebook user Les Littleyellow on the Complaint Singapore page.

Attached was a video of a man washing something in a basin outside his unit, and causing a steady stream of water to drip down to the floors below.

Responding to the video, people online began commenting on why they had stopped placing their laundry outside.

“One reason why I use a dryer instead of hanging nowadays. You never know what gets on your clean clothes. Sadly, having considerate neighbours is like a luxury these days,” said Facebook user Irenes Bagindo.

“That why I never ever hang outside anymore almost over 15yrs now, just hang inside,” said another netizen.

“It’s very common with such problems if you are staying in HDB flats. Complain also no use. Just have to bear with it. My top unit crazy woman every day will pour a big pail of water out from the kitchen window. All my clothes wet. I complained until siah liao. TC said they will advise the woman. But nothing improve till today,” said netizen Aida Francis Aida.

Others mentioned it wasn’t just water that they had to deal with. Facebook user Eddie Peh said there were also sopping wet mops and discarded cigarette butts.

“This is selfish behaviour which should not be allowed in community living. If there is no enforcement, there will be more and more issues down the road,” noted Facebook user Teng Fong Lee. “My friend at Bedok North, his neighbour on the eighth floor, always hang out dripping stuff like mops.”

According to HDB, as quoted by real-estate website PropertyGuru, residents are not allowed to hang wet laundry on the bamboo poles or dripping mops outside their homes.

“After clothes are washed, make sure they stop dripping before you hang them out to dry. Dripping water causes an inconvenience to people walking through the flats. It is also a safety hazard as people may slip and fall. You may also ruin the clothes of your neighbours living on the floors below you.” /TISG
