A man was stunned when he discovered that a very generous serving of food, containing a lot of meat, only cost $6.50, a cleaner uncle told him.
However, upon talking to the hawker stall owner where the uncle had bought his food, the man found out that the cleaner is given a very special price.
“Just sell him cheaper…& let him enjoy it,” wrote Mr Henry Tan in a Facebook post on the Can Eat! Hawker Food page on Tuesday (Sept 6), adding, “what a kind hawker.”
Mr Tan wrote in his post that he had come “to tabao chicken rice back for dinner” at Jia Chicken Rice at Berseh Food Centre, Jalan Besar on the day he saw an older man with a big plate of chicken and pork slices, rice, some vegetables and a hard-boiled egg.
“I ask Uncle…Wa uncle you eat so much ah…then uncle tell me…$6.50,” he wrote, adding, “Er siah jiak.…I was STUNNED… …huh??? So much meat only $6.50???”
Indeed, at a time when inflation has driven the price of everyday goods, especially food, by a lot, while many food sellers have been forced to either increase their prices or decrease their portion servings, no wonder Mr Tan wrote that he was “stunned.”
And while many may not feel that $6.50 is a low price for a meal, a photo of the dish showed that the portion was plentiful.
One commenter on the post said that the meal would normally cost around $9.
When he approached the owner at Jia Chicken Rice, he was told that the man works as a cleaner at the food centre and that the meat-heavy meal he was given is not part of the regular menu.
Mr Tan added, And I tell you… this chicken rice
Jing jiak Ho jiak…no run hor!
Jalan Besar HC….stall #01-06.”
Many netizens praised the stall owner for his generosity toward the uncle, with some even saying they’d support the hawker.
In one comment, Mr Tan wrote that the stall owner has “a good heart but his face a bit fierce haha.”
A netizen then commented, “bro, fierce in face, kind in heart… enjoy your meal …”
