Fresh grad complains that his “incompetent” supervisor pushes all work to him while his supervisor “barely does anything”

A fresh graduate who had been working for half a year in a small SME took to social media complaining about his “incompetent” supervisor.

In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the fresh grad wrote “I like my company and the job scope but i just cannot deal with my supervisor”.

Referring to his supervisor as ‘M’ throughout the post, the fresh grad wrote that any work assigned to his supervisor would automatically be pushed to him. The team was fairly small, he noted, and added that only he and his supervisor were assigned to that specific role.

“i am swamped with a lot of work because M just pushes EVERYTHING to me. M barely does anything, and i know because in company meetings every team need to report our updates on the projects. the projects my team are running are all what i am doing alone” the fresh grad wrote. He added that even when his supervisor went on a 2-week holiday, there was no work they were doing that needed to be handed over to him.

Despite this, he wrote in his post that he could not take more than 3-days of leave. In addition to projects, the fresh grad was handling other complicated tasks. When going through how to handle these tasks with his supervisor, the fresh grad said that “M just laugh and switch topic, expecting me to settle??? i know M doesn’t know how to do the processes still so i cannot just go on leave and MIA”.

“also recently [I] got a small promotion although im only 6 months in coz [I] did well on a project [I] was leading. M didn’t even congratulate me, infact M just complained straight to my face, why they didn’t promote M? because M feels that he/she is “leading the team very well”?!? [I’m] doing well becoz of my own capabilities, but M somehow think he/she guided me that’s why [I] can do so well”, the fresh grad wrote.

He added that his supervisor was not able to give them proper advice because the supervisor did not know what was going on himself. “[I] have to often consult people from other teams who have more experience in the projects. [I] am frustrated because M does not appreciate the work that [I] do, infact [I] can sense he/she feels threatened coz ppl often find me to discuss projects instead of going to him/her”, the fresh grad wrote.

He asked if this was a common practice in SMEs.

Netizens who commented on the post wrote that the fresh graduate should make the best out of the opportunity, learn what they could and move on to working at a different company, possibly an MNC in the future.
