A woman racked up debts of over S$200,000 from online shopping, forcing her father to use up his savings and take loans to repay the amount owed. He eventually stabbed her to death during an argument over the money.
Liu Juan (not her real name), 30, developed an addiction to online shopping in 2019. It was reported that packages were delivered to their home daily, with a new one arriving even before the previous delivery could be opened.
China’s Xinmin Evening News reported on Nov 11 that the father, Liu Gang (also not his real name) and his daughter, Liu Juan worked as security guards at a local train station in China. They made enough for daily necessities, but couldn’t afford a luxurious lifestyle or big-ticket purchases.
She then realized she couldn’t pay the amount on her credit card statements as she only earned about 3,000 to 4,000 yuan (S$584 to S$778) a month. She then asked her father for help, so he withdrew from his savings and borrowed from relatives. He even took some loans to repay his daughter’s debt.
The situation strained their relationship, and on the day of the incident, Liu Gang was drinking with a relative when the topic of debt came up. His relative said that Liu Juan might have borrowed from loan sharks. He replied that he would die with his daughter because of the debt.
They received even more financial assistance from relatives, but the amount was not enough to repay everything. The duo argued that night, and during the altercation, the father picked up a fruit knife and stabbed his daughter to death.
Liu Gang was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and stripped of his political rights for four years after he was convicted of intentional homicide. /TISG
