Bus driver who helped limping elderly man gets publicly commended by SBS Transit

SINGAPORE: A heartwarming incident unfolded at a bus stop along Bedok Reservoir Road on Friday (25 Aug) when a Senior Bus Captain from SBS Transit demonstrated an act of kindness towards an elderly man in need.

The incident, witnessed by a passenger onboard, showcases the compassion and empathy exhibited by 35-year-old Senior Bus Captain Ngui Soon Peng. The elderly man, whose left foot was encased in a cast, was seen limping slowly towards Service 65 at the said bus stop. Quickly noticing the man’s predicament, Mr Soon Peng sprang into action, swiftly exiting his bus cabin to offer assistance.

With a gentle demeanor, Mr Soon Peng positioned his hands under the elderly man’s arms, providing the support he needed to ascend the bus steps. With care, he helped the man settle into a seat on the bus. Recognizing potential challenges that might arise when the passenger would have to disembark, Mr Soon Peng thoughtfully engaged in a conversation, inquiring about the man’s intended destination.

As the bus approached the elderly man’s designated stop, Mr Soon Peng rose promptly and approached the man. Displaying remarkable consideration, he placed the man’s arm over his shoulder, creating a support system. Together, they embarked on a slow but steady descent from the vehicle.

Mr Soon Peng’s act of kindness did not conclude there.

Once off the bus, he continued to demonstrate his genuine care for the elderly man’s well-being. Patiently guiding him to a comfortable seat at the bus stop, Mr Soon Peng ensured his safety and comfort before promptly returning to the bus, resuming his duties, and serving the other passengers on their journey.

Passengers who witnessed the heartening incident reached out to SBS Transit to share the uplifting story. SBS Transit has commended Senior Bus Captain Ngui Soon Peng for his outstanding display of compassion and empathy.

In a statement, the company hailed him as an exemplary role model for all employees and an embodiment of the values they uphold. It said: “Well done Soon Peng! You make us so proud and are indeed an exemplary role model for us all!”
