Beyond’s Paul Wong celebrates wife Athena Chu’s 50th birthday

China — Although Beyond member Paul Wong may not be able to be physically present with his wife – actress Athena Chun on her 50th birthday – she surely is always on his mind.

Wong posted on Weibo a photo of the couple kissing each other on Chu’s birthday on Monday (Oct 25). He captioned it with: “Happy birthday, dear! Please wait for me to come home.”

The 57-year-old Wong is a guitarist for the legendary Hong Kong band Beyond. He is currently in Haikou city on China’s Hainan Island participating in the reality show Call Me By Fire, which features other male celebrities such as Taiwanese actor Jerry Yan and Chinese actor Vincent Zhao.

In the meantime, Chu is appearing on Zhejiang Television’s food variety show Qing Chi Fan De Jie Jie, loosely translated as Sisters Who Invite You To Dinner. The show also featured Hong Kong actresses Ada Choi, Monica Chan and Catherine Hung.

Coincidentally, Choi’s husband, Chinese actor Max Zhang, is also on Call Me By Fire, reported Straits Times. 

Chu had her big break when she acted as the heroine Huang Rong in 1994’s TVB remake of late writer Louis Cha’s martial arts novel The Legend Of The Condor Heroes. She is also known for playing the fairy Zixia in the two-part movie A Chinese Odyssey (1995), starring Stephen Chow and the late Ng Man Tat.

Chu dated Chow for about three years before they broke up in 1995. She then dated Wong for about 14 years before they married in 2012. The couple has a nine-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Chu’s recent appearances are mostly in mainland Chinese shows, acting in Chinese movies such as the romantic film Once Again (2017) and featuring in reality shows such as Get Smart! Dad (2020).

Born March 31, 1964, Paul Wong Koon-chung, known professionally as Paul Wong, is a Hong Kong musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He used to be the lead guitarist of the rock band Beyond until the band was disestablished in 2005.

He earned the award “The Best Rock Singer” in the Hit Awards in 2012, from when on he becomes one of the hubs for rock singers besides Beyond‘s mainstay Wong Ka Kui.

His wife is actress Athena Chu, gave birth to their only daughter. He is also a member of HKACF (Hong Kong Artistes Christian Fellowship). /TISG
