Instead of the typical vulgarities or flashing of the middle finger, an auntie’s smile after being given way to cross a street has gone viral online.

“Auntie just made my morning a little better, saying thank you for giving her way! Just look at her smile!” shared Facebook page ROADS.sg on Wednesday (Sept 7).

The video showed the car driver entering an estate and stopping by the pedestrian crossing to let an auntie pass.

The woman raised her hand in appreciation and gave the driver a wide smile as she crossed.

The video currently has over 213,000 views and 10,000 likes, warming the hearts of netizens.

“Both pedestrian and driver showed us how to be graceful when using public space. Thank you. This is my first time liking a post by ROADS.sg,” commented Facebook user Fazlin Jaya Indra with over 240 likes.

“Well done, the world needs more people like you,” commended Facebook user Ian Hewett. “You put a smile on all of our faces!” said another netizen.

Many noted that there is a big difference when road users extend simple gestures of appreciation to one another.

“A simple wave or nod of the head when you cross a pedestrian crossing makes a driver feel appreciated, and that, in turn, would encourage drivers to give way willingly. In the long run, courtesy on the road would be a norm,” said Facebook user Jeff Long.

One Khad Hum Khaw identified the woman as Auntie May, who was informed of the video. “We showed her this post and all your comments. Thank you for this post. It makes her day too!” /TISG
