Bride and groom face backlash for placing QR codes at wedding banquet tables, asking guests to fund their honeymoon

MALAYSIA: A Malaysian couple’s decision to use payment QR codes at their wedding banquet has left netizens divided over whether the gesture was creative or inappropriate.

According to Malaysian daily mStar, the couple placed small signs on banquet tables featuring a QR code for guests to scan and transfer money to support their honeymoon expenses.

One guest, who attended the wedding, took a photo of the sign and uploaded it to social media, expressing discomfort with the practice. He described it as “like begging from guests,” noting that it broke with the usual custom of giving red envelopes to the newlyweds’ parents rather than directly funding the couple’s honeymoon.

“Although it’s not mandatory, it feels too rushed, and I hope it doesn’t become the norm,” the guest said.

The post quickly went viral, triggering heated discussions among netizens.

Some claimed the guest was “making a mountain out of a molehill and nitpicking” over what they viewed as a harmless and modern approach.

Others, however, sided with him, arguing that while using QR codes could be convenient, the wording on the message seemed inappropriate. “It looked like begging for help,” one comment read.

Several netizens suggested a more tactful approach, proposing that the couple could have worded the message differently, perhaps by saying the QR code was “for guests who don’t have cash,” to make it sound more polite and considerate.
