Leading online cab aggregator Uber has launched its food delivery service UberEATS in India, which enables registered users to order food from its partner restaurants and get it delivered at their home.

The service will be initially available in five areas in Mumbai suburbs, with plans to expand to other cities by the end of this year, as per news reports.

Bhavik Rathod has been appointed as Head of UberEATS India. Uber has already partnered with around 200 restaurants in Mumbai, including The Bohri Kitchen, Le15, Coffee by Di Bella, FreshMenu, Chaayos, and The Good Wife in the city. One will be able to order seven days a week, round the clock, as long as the restaurants are operational, through the app.

The company will compete with the likes of Swiggy (backed by Harmony Partners and Singapore-based RB investments) and Zomato in this segment.

Here’s how UberEATS works

  1. Download the app
  2. Pick delivery location – Input your address where you’d like your meal delivered
  3. Find the meal – Browse local restaurants or search by cuisine type to find exactly what your taste buds are asking for
  4. Place your order – Pick the items you want right now or schedule your order to arrive whenever is most convenient for you
  5. Pay through Paytm
  6. Track the progress of the delivery – Get updates as your order is prepared and delivered to your destination

Launched in 2014, UberEATS is already available in several cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Auckland, Bangkok, Bogota, Brussels, Capetown, Dubai, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Stockholm, Taipei, Tokyo, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, Vienna, Warsaw, and multiple cities in the US, Australia, Canada, England, France, and Mexico. The company is working with over hundreds of restaurants in these cities to put the best local food all in one place.

By tapping into the Uber network, one can get anything from its roster of local restaurants, fast. The average order takes 30 minutes from start to finish. When the user is ready to place the order, he/she will see a total that includes the food and delivery price.  One can pay with one’s Uber account and track the order.
