Workers’ Party chief Low Thia Khiang had a stiff fight to retain his position as secretary-general of the opposition party. MP for Aljunied GRC, Mr Chen Show Mao challenged him for the position. According to various news sites, Mr Low narrowly beat Mr Chen with 61 votes to 45.
This was the first time the 59-year-old opposition leader faced contest for the post since he took it up in 2001. Despite losing to Mr Low for the party’s top position, Mr Chen was elected to the Party’s Central Executive Council (CEC).
Party chairman, Ms Sylvia Lim, was elected unopposed. All members of Parliament from the Party were elected to the new CEC. Former Non-Constituency MP Gerald Giam was also elected in the CEC. Ex-NCMP Yee Jenn Jong, did not field himself as a candidate for the internal party election.
In all, 22 members contested for the 12 CEC places at today’s (29 May) election. Mr Mohammed Rahizan Yaacob, who was party vice-chairman, Mr L. Somasundaram, who was deputy treasurer, Dr John Yam, and Mr Mohamed Fairoz Shariff, who was co-opted into the CEC in Oct 2015, did not make it to the CEC.
