SINGAPORE — A distribution of goods held last weekend by the Workers’ Party team members at East Coast GRC caused Ms Nicole Seah to take on a rather “sombre” perspective. She wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Dec 13), noting today’s high cost of living.

“A few cents increase for a cup of kopi may be a slight complaint for some of us, but to someone in need, it could be a luxury to be given up completely,” she wrote.

Ms Seah, who is the president of the WP’s Youth Wing and who has been active on the ground at East Coast GRC for the past several years, told the story of one resident who welcomed the bag of rice he was given via the food distribution because it helped with his expenses.

This particular resident does not work at the moment because of “recurrent tremors in his dominant hand, which renders him unable to carry out work that requires extensive fine or gross motor skills, such as transporting goods or cleaning,” Ms Seah explained.

She also wrote that the WP East Coast team intentionally buys goods directly from mom-and-pop shops for its food distribution activities to provide support for the owners.

Ms Seah also acknowledged the aid extended by one donor, Mr Ben Ng from Aquila Ascension Advisory, writing that he had involved his friends and family in the distribution activity.

“It was a joy to see their young children getting involved in the distribution, and throughout the course of our chats, they managed to also brainstorm some new ways of bringing a positive impact to our beneficiaries.

With such inspiration and team effort, we look forward to doing more in the coming year!” she added. /TISG
