‘How about adults who talk loudly?’ — Singaporeans call for “Screaming Children Surcharge” fine also for loud adults in public spaces

In response to news of a Singaporean restaurant imposing a surcharge of S$10 on customers with noisy children who disturb other customers in the establishment, people are calling for the same fine to be imposed on adults who speak too loudly and contribute to “noise pollution” in public spaces.

In recent news, a restaurant in Tan Boon Liat called Angie’s Oyster Bar & Grill, has made one thing clear–though children are more than welcome to dine in the establishment with their parents, children who disturb other customers will not be tolerated. Thus, it has implemented a “Screaming Children Surcharge” of S$10 for customers with “screaming or uncontrolled children disturbing other guests.”

This seemed to resonate with many Singaporeans who have voiced their support for this new way of helping keep the peace, especially in public places where many would like to relax and enjoy time off work.

“I wish there (were) more restaurants with such (a) policy. I just want to dine in peace. People pay a premium to have the ambiance, not to go there to enjoy the sound of the neighborhood playground,” wrote one online user.

While many others supported the fine, others also called for the same surcharge to be imposed on adults who talk loudly and disturb the peace in restaurants and other public establishments.

“What about adults who talk loudly? Should they also impose a surcharge for noise pollution?” asked one online user, while another pointed out that teenagers can get pretty loud too. “I have seen young people…teenagers talking SUPER loud, or even louder than crying children.”
