Chicken rice on menu S$4.50 but customers must pay either S$5.50 or S$6.50 upon ordering because ‘kampung chicken is expensive’

After choosing chicken rice stated as S$4.50 on the menu, a customer was surprised he only had two options, S$5.50 or S$6.50, upon ordering.

“Tong Fong Fatt at 16 Bedok South Road is doing it again,” wrote a Facebook page Complaint Singapore member on Friday (Aug 5).

The customer noted that the stall, 東風發 Tong Fong Fatt Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice, would advertise their chicken rice at S$4.50. He also attached a photo of the “new” price list.

“However, upon placing order, they’ll ask you if you want S$5.50 or S$6.50. When I asked them why it’s not $4.50, their reply is bcos kampung chicken is expensive.”

The customer returned to the stall and observed other customers would face the same issue.

“And the customer did the same thing as me – paid the higher price since already queued so long and avoid the trouble of going to another store to queue. I believe many others acted the same.”

“This is the second time that I was caught by the same store and same stall keepers,” he added.

The concerned individual urged the stall’s management to look into the issue and update the advertised price to avoid confusion.

It appears that a similar review made it to online travel information and booking website Tripadvisor when a customer was given the S$4.50 or S$5.50 option after choosing the S$3.50 chicken rice.

“Not the first time (I) encounter this type of terrible service,” said the netizen who posted the review on July 1.

“Last time ordered S$2.50 at Bugis hawker for a kid; the auntie will become very rude and say only have 2-3pieces of meat. I said it’s ok and she looked very angry. I don’t know why their branches staff all are so rude and have attitude problems. Did the boss teach them to ‘chop’ their customers?” the reviewer added.

Netizens also commented on the post and shared similar experiences with having to choose from more expensive options upon ordering. /TISG
