A concerned member of the public posted on social media, encouraging commuters to practice patience and wait for passengers to exit the train before boarding.

“Please let others go out of the train first, stand on one side,” wrote Complaint Singapore Facebook page member Akydd Rahim on Thursday (April 7).

He attached a video of an MRT station where an approaching train was coming to a halt.

As soon as the gates opened, waiting passengers began boarding, thus limiting the space for those alighting the train.

“I honestly mean no harm here but just posting this so that people will be more aware,” wrote Mr Rahim.

“All these shouldn’t be said again. We are adults. We should know all these courtesy by now because (the) government paid a lot of money on advertisements, and yet it all gone to waste,” he added.

The netizen continued by requesting passengers to refrain from blaming the SMRT staff. “They were actually doing their job, but we also have a part to play too.”

Mr Rahim noted that he acts on his suggestion and has reminded commuters of proper etiquette at the Jurong East station platform on multiple occasions.

“I even told one aunty off, and she scolded me for it,” he said. “So enough is enough, and I have to rely on social media in hope that you would tell your family members about it too.”

Netizens agreed that Singapore should be a “more civil-conscious society.”

“There is always a minority of people who are “Kia Su” and not easy to talk sense into them whereby at times got backfired too,” said Facebook user Chew Boon Huat.

Others noted they too experience similar behaviour during their commute. “Same here, especially during peak hours! Not sure why must there be people standing at the door, not letting the people come out first,” said Facebook user Daniel Ljm.

Netizens also shared different moments when inconsiderate behaviour was highlighted. “The worst are those able-bodied rushing to take the lifts, leaving those needing the lifts to wait for the next one,” said Facebook user Fau Zie, the comment receiving numerous likes./TISG
