Young resident tells the SDP that the current government is “more concerned about money politics than the welfare of our citizens”

A walkabout in Marsiling by Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) members Bryan Lim Boon Heng and Benjamin Pwee saw them meeting with a young resident who expressed his concerns about the current government.

The man, only referred to as James, was a first-time voter and when asked about his political concerns, said, “The youths (sic) know the problem created by this PAP government. They have stopped building on the legacy left by Lee Kuan Yew. They are more concerned about money politics than the welfare of our citizens, especially the elderly”.

However, he added, “we are also worried that if we remove them from power, we may not have a good slate of leaders to lead this country forward”.

To this, Bryan Lim of the SDP replied, “We have heard your concerns but do note that when Parliament is dissolved, there is no PM or Cabinet to helm the country”.

He explained that, “life will still go on during the election campaign”.

“Regardless of the electoral results, the civil service will continue to support the government of the day (regardless of whether it is formed by a coalition of parties or not) to implement its policies. The same political logic also applies to the other parts of the world too.

Hence, the people must understand that the civil service serves the government of the day, not the party of yesterday,” Lim wrote. /TISG
