Singapore—It’s that time of year again for Apple to unveil the product that basically changed the future of smartphones, the well-beloved iPhone, of course.
The biggest surprise about the 2019 iteration of the iPhone is its price. On the lowest end of the three models unveiled on Tuesday, September 10, is the iPhone 11.
In the United States, the entry-level iPhone 11 is selling for US$699.
However, Business Insider Singapore reported on Wednesday, September 11, that the iPhone 11 will retail here at S$ 1,149.
The two other models that were introduced on September 10 belong to the iPhone Pro line. These are the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, selling in the US for US$999 and US$1,099, respectively.
Here in Singapore, the iPhone 11 Pro will sell for S$1,649 while the iPhone 11 Pro Max will be sold for S$1,799.
Interested individuals may pre-order on Apple’s website (apple.com/sg/) by 8:00 pm on Friday , September 13, and they will be sold in stores starting from next Friday, September 20.
The lowered prices came as a surprise to many. Last year, the entry level price for the iPhone XR was at US $750, with higher end models going over $1000. However, poor sales last year, especially for the more expensive models, is very likely the cause of the lowered prices.
The trend has been for iPhone users to hold on to their phones longer than ever, which may also have contributed to lower prices that would attract more buyers.
Interestingly, the iPhone XR, was the company’s bestseller, and users consider it to be as good as its pricier siblings, at 25 percent less.
iPhone 11’s New Features
What’s new with this year’s batch of iPhones, you might ask? Well, for starters, they all get a new camera.
According to Apple’s site, here are the exciting innovations with the iPhone 11.
“A new dual‑camera system captures more of what you see and love. The fastest chip ever in a smartphone and all‑day battery life let you do more and charge less. And the highest‑quality video in a smartphone, so your memories look better than ever.”
The iPhone 11 comes in 6 colors—black, red, silver, lavender, yellow and green.
The phone comes with 2 cameras in the back, one 12 MP Wide sensor for three times faster autofocus for low light shots, as well as a 12MP Ultra Wide, which is “great for landscapes, travel, groups, large interiors and action shots.”
It also boasts better video editing than ever before, has stronger front and back glass, and is water-resistant up to 2 metres for up to 30 minutes.
According to apple.sg the iPhone 11 Pro models (Pro and Pro max) “has a transformative triple-camera system that adds lots of capability, without complexity. An unprecedented leap in battery life. And a mind‑blowing chip that doubles down on machine learning and pushes the boundaries of what a smartphone can do.”
The two new Pro models come in four colors: midnight green (which is a new color for the iPhone), space gray, silver and gold.
Furthermore, the Apple website says about the Pro models, “We custom‑built A13 Bionic with a focus on machine learning across the entire chip — enabling experiences that simply aren’t found on any other smartphone. In fact, it’s so fast, so powerful and so intelligent, it’s years ahead of any other chip. Which gives you an unfair advantage.” -/TISG
Apple’s MacBook Pro joins list of items banned from flying, certain units being recalled
